Our Foundation is guided by the belief that a good education is very important in order to excel in life.
A BRIEF HISTORY
In 2001, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio decided that they wanted to do something to express their gratitude to the New Mexico community that has shown them so much support throughout their careers. After long discussions, they decided that they wanted to create a scholarship for New Mexico students. Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio have always believed that a good education is very important in order to excel in life, and providing scholarships was a perfect way to encourage students to pursue higher education.
Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio knew that they would need help with this project. They approached Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) with their idea, and acting superintendent, Mr. Joseph M. Vigil, generously offered the support of APS. At that moment, the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship was born!
OUR MISSION
The primary purpose of the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Foundation is to provide and encourage higher education for New Mexico high school students, by helping to lessen the financial burden of going to college.
Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio believe that everyone should have the opportunity to attain a higher education. They created the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship to provide and encourage higher education for New Mexico students.
WHEN WE FIRST STARTED…
In the beginning, we gave out 10 Scholarships to 10 different students that were each worth $4,000.00, and it was solely for graduating Albuquerque Public School high school students. Today, the Scholarship has grown to encompass any graduating New Mexico high school student. The dollar amount of the Scholarship has varied over the years (from $1,000.00 to $8,000.00), as well as the eligibility requirements. To date, 421 Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarships have been awarded to New Mexico students!
“Each year we receive more and more application forms from students who genuinely want and deserve a college education. Our goal is to be able to continue helping New Mexico students lessen the financial burden of a higher education so that they can attend college.”
THE FUNDRAISER CONCERT
Beginning in 2001, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio have held a yearly concert in order to raise funds and to create awareness for their Scholarship. Thanks to all of the people who have attended, along with all of the sponsors, individuals, and organizations involved, the yearly fundraiser concert has become one of the most successful events in New Mexico history.
2003 was the first year that the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship was awarded to students. Every year since then, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio have held their official Scholarship Presentation to award students their Scholarships.
The Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship continues to evolve every year as Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio continually strive to expand the amount of financial help they can provide students across the state of New Mexico.
The Scholarship application forms for the 2023 school year are available now, and depending on the scholarship you choose, any graduating New Mexico high school student can apply.
